English Week - Something for Everyone

The Year of the Ox finished in style at BHJS with students and teachers joining together to make this year’s English Festival Week one to remember. The students themselves were the ‘star-performers’. Forms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 each took responsibility for an English event to be held on each day. Ably assisted by their English teachers, they planned, publicised and held events designed to showcase student talent and provide authentic opportunities to use the language learned in the classroom.

On Monday all the classes in Form 1 used their storytelling skills to deliver Fairy Tales and other well-known stories to their peers. While each class did a sterling job, the winning group came from Form 1D. Performers used gestures, posture, character voices and other storytelling skills in order to enliven their performances. Well done Form 1!

On Tuesday the whole school was treated to a special show put on by Form 3. The famous BHJS Recycled Fashion Show was a huge success and was enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. Students designed, produced and modelled outfits made entirely from recycled materials. Congratulations to the winning classes and thanks Form 3 for such a great show!

On Wednesday Form 2 took their chance to share short presentations in an event excitingly entitled ‘Believe It Or Not’. As you may guess, the topics presented on were unbelievable truths and amazing facts from science and the natural world. Well done Form 2 and special congratulations to the winning groups from 2B and 2E!

On Thursday it was the turn of Form 4 to demonstrate how talented they are, and they did just that! In the event entitled ‘Karaoke Divas and Kings’, each class wrote an ‘Anthem’ for their class and produced a musical show. The performances were all witty and touching. Both judges found choosing a winner to be a very tough task. In the end 4A took the first prize!

On Friday Form 6 held an English Bazaar to raise money for the Community Chest. Items were donated by staff and students to be sold on the day of the Bazaar. The senior students at BHJS collected, priced and sold the items during lunchtime and in the short space of an hour, a sum of almost 2,000 dollars was raised! Credit is due to Form 6 for their conscientious hard work in raising money for such a good cause.
Finally a special mention should go to an event undertaken purely on the initiative of some of Form 4’s most talented future musical stars. New to English week this year, a mini English ‘Rock Concert’ was held after school on Thursday. As Mariah Carey, Avril Lavigne, and Linkin Park were not available, students and teachers sang their hearts out to a select audience instead.

Huge thanks are due to all staff and students who made the week so memorable and special and we are all already looking forward to next year!
