Programmes and activities for this year’s Gospel month took place in the first two weeks into the new year. The theme was made up of 4 Chinese characters meaning ‘Being busy, Being lost, Death and Hope’ [ 忙,茫, 亡, 望].
Every day started with a prayer meeting in the chapel. The official opening ceremony was conducted on 6th January during the brief assembly, in which our principal, Mr Peter Kwok, shared about the pitfalls of ‘busyness’. In the hall assembly that week, under the guidance of Miss Wong Sau Wai, students gave a remarkable drama presentation which encouraged fellow schoolmates to find purpose and meaning in life, rather than being preoccupied with things that did not last eternally. With witty dialogue and an original script, the talented actors captured the attention of all members of the audience.
Throughout the two weeks, there was sharing from teachers and alumni in various forms. Mr Yu Yiu Tong and alumnus Ma Man Ho walked around the school singing hymns and bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to every corner of the campus. In one of the assemblies, Mrs Pinky Tam shared about the desperation of being lost and the joy of finding hope in Christ. Personal evangelism conducted in groups of 2 to 3 Christian students led to the conversion of two of their schoolmates. Retired teacher Mr Wong Kit Yee shared from the viewpoint of Biology and gave testimony to seeing God at work by observing nature. In another hymn sharing session, Mr Kwok, Miss Chan Mei Ying, Mr Neil Thomas and Mr Yu Yiu Tong shared some of their favourite hymns with students.
The series of events culminated in the gospel meeting on Friday, 14th January. Our guest speaker was Rev Chan Yan Ming, also an alumnus. The hall assembly started with singspiration led by six dedicated Form 5 students. As Rev Chan came onto the stage, he greeted students warmly. A lively and captivating speaker with a great sense of humour, he vividly recalled his days as a rebellious youth and shared with candour how he could only be genuinely and effectively reformed by the grace and love of God through his acceptance of Jesus as his Saviour. Not only did he inspire and challenge students with a powerful and thought-provoking message, he also blessed us with his musical gifts of singing and guitar-playing. A total of 162 students came to Christ that day. Follow-up sessions allowing students to ask questions and learn more about the gospel began in late January and were conducted at lunch time or after school.
All in all, Gospel Month highlighted the hope and truth offered by the gospel, and allowed students and teachers chances to reflect on their own worldviews or even come to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
