2020-01-02

Two teams of our F.3 students participated in the "AI Data Wizard – How Many Landslides?" competition. Both teams won merit awards among 12 teams and their prizes were presented during the award ceremony held at the Learning & Teaching Expo 2019 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 12th December 2019. Congratulations!

The competition was co-organized by Hong Kong Education City (HKEdCity), the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), Microsoft (HK) Limited and the Hong Kong Meteorological Society. Participants were required to make use of millions of historical data, including rainfall, slope information, landslide data, etc., from 40 landslide episodes for model training purposes. Students formulated their models by making use of machine learning methods in AI to estimate the number of landslides in each of the other 10 episodes. They were also required to submit a PowerPoint and a 3-minute video to introduce the principles of their models.

Through joining this competition, our students applied the skills of AI machine learning and spreadsheet data processing that they had learnt in their Computer Literacy lessons. Their knowledge of landslides learnt in Geography lessons also aided their work.
