With the advancement of technology, the use of computers and smartphones has become an indispensable part of people’s lives. However, many are still unfamiliar with these kinds of devices despite living in such a technology-saturated environment. Recently, four of our students joined an IT volunteer service, held in Upper Wong Tai Sin Estate, which was a free repair service for IT devices. Our students helped residents solve different problems regarding their computers, including slow speed, disconnection between the printer and paper tray and the inability to turn on their devices.

Our students believe that they can use their own knowledge of technology to help those in need and narrow the digital gap in Hong Kong communities. Not only can this alleviate citizen’s helplessness when facing rapid development of modern technology, it can also help them to communicate better through the use of technology. This surely is an activity which increases the technological ability of different stakeholders in society in order to better equip themselves for the changing needs of the 21st century. Our students felt that the activity was meaningful as it showed the spirit of ‘helping people to help themselves’.
