We are thrilled to announce that a group of Form 5 ICT students from BHJS has won the championship in the ASTRON SPACE LAB 3 competition. This incredible achievement highlights not only their technical expertise but also their perseverance and creativity. The winning project is implemented by Python programming in which a camera module is utilized to calculate the average speed of the International Space Station (ISS).
Using the camera method, the students captured photos with time and location metadata, converted the coordinates into degrees, and applied the Haversine formula to calculate the distances between shots. By dividing the distances by the timestamps, they determined the ISS's average speed and averaged multiple data points to minimize errors. Their solution delivered accurate results and earned them the championship title.
The team expressed their gratitude to the organizers, judges, and teachers for supporting them throughout this journey. They also credited the government’s IT Innovation Lab Funding, which provided the financial resources needed to undertake this ambitious project.
The award ceremony was held on Saturday, 28 June 2025, at HKU LE1, where the team shared their journey and reflections. Clovis, one of the team members, described the win as “unbelievable,” as it was his first award in secondary school. Toby, the team leader, shared how the victory came as a delightful surprise after weeks of hard work. Other team members, Kelvin, Alex and Carson expressed similar sentiments, emphasizing the value of teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience.
The students also reflected on the invaluable lessons learned during the competition. From programming advancements to better teamwork and adaptability, the experience has enriched their skills and deepened their interest in ICT. While none of them currently plan to pursue a career in space exploration, they remain passionate about programming and other technology-related fields.
This victory not only demonstrates the students' talent but also inspires the entire school community to dream big, work hard, and embrace challenges. Congratulations to the team for their outstanding accomplishment!
